The commerce and distribution sector is one of the pillars of the national economy: it is the second biggest employer of the nation after agriculture, in 2013 it accounted for 13.4% of the working population of the Morocco, or 1.42 million people.

The sector is also the biggest employer in urban areas with 1.1 million workers in 2013, representing 21% of the urban working population.

In terms of the generation of wealth, the commerce and distribution sector is ranked as the third most productive sector: in 2013, its contribution to the national GDP amounted to 9.4%, with an added value established for that year to be close to 81.65 billion dirhams.
